Genius Hour Semester 2 Reflection and Evaluation
Emily Pickett
“If it does not challenge you, it does not change you.”
Summarize the purpose of your Genius Hour project in 140 characters.
The purpose of my Genius Hour project is to help future soldiers prepare for the vigorous training and physical expectations the military has for them once they enlist.
Explain the process of your Genius Hour project. Be reflective. Be contemplative. Explain and describe your journey. (No Less Than Three FULL Paragraphs.)
The process of my Genius Hour Project is very simple, and can be broken into three parts. Motivation, action, and results. With motivation, it all starts with your mind. You need to set your mind on what you want to accomplish. If you tell yourself you can’t do it, then typically, you won’t succeed. Personally, I started with the mindset that I wanted to change my body and how I felt at the end of the day. I was sick of feeling bloated and having stomach aches after I ate. Sick of feeling my stomach rolls when I sat down to watch TV. I realized that I need to be in the best physical shape possible to be able to pass my PT tests, and because it is a healthier lifestyle I should be living. The fear of becoming obese or having diabetes or heart problems, or not passing my PT tests and get kicked out of the Army drove me to insane amounts of physical training and healthy food choices. Motivation and determination is key to getting in shape and leading healthy lifestyle.
Next, comes taking action. Eating right, getting enough exercise, and the healthy amount of sleep can all contribute to your new healthy lifestyle. Your body is like a vehicle. It only runs if it has gas, right? Well our body also needs fuel. But we cannot let it be the wrong type of fuel. Make simple decisions, for example eating a salad rather that french fries, or as simple of a decision as getting grilled instead of crispy chicken. I learned that deep fried foods are what makes my stomach hurt and bloated the most. Eating less sugary snacks and filling your body with fruit and vegetables is the action we need to take to make our body strong and healthy. Physical fitness is also another very important piece of the puzzle to getting in shape and healthy. Running, weight lifting, simple pushups or situps or crunches are all little things that can contribute to healthy living. Getting into a routine with good PT and good eating habits is the action that has to be taken to get healthy and strong.
And lastly, results. I began my journey being 3 pounds over my weight limit for my height and I had to lose the pounds and gain muscle if I was going to be able to pass my PT and physical health exams. These simple little tips got me so I do not have rolls anymore, and I can easily pass my monthly physical exams for the Army. I learned that you may not see results for a couple weeks, or a couple months, depending on the thickness of your routines and how dedicated you are. But the biggest thing I can say about trying to get into a healthy lifestyle is that hard work pays off. In the long run, your work WILL pay off, and following just these simple little tips may give you a new look at your lifestyle. I wanted to share my experience and my journey and results so that way people who are looking to join the military especially them, that they know what to do so that they are fully prepared for the vigourous journey the military has to offer them in their future. I did this because I know it would have been nice if I had been warned on how to get prepared before I shipped out.
The intention For Genius Hour is NOT only to learn, but ALSO to share your knowledge with others who can and will benefit from your learning. How did you share your learning? What do you hope the result might be? (No Less Than Two Full Paragraphs.)
I shared my knowledge of physical fitness and my journey by setting good examples and showing my dedication. I am a firm believer in the saying “actions speak louder than words.” I think that what I did spoke louder than what I could ever say. The people who saw me running, at the gym, doing situps, and more running, they saw me and my dedication. I posted several websites on my facebook of how to get in shape and good running tips for beginners. That way people can look and get good tips of how I started running and how I started my journey.
I hope the results of my journey gave people motivation to start their adventurous journeys. I had high hopes throughout my whole journey that I would lose fat, gain muscle, and become healthier. This journey has shown me that I do have the willpower to accomplish anything I set my mind to. I hope that with my journey, I show people that it is possible to become healthier, and have a strong, fit body. It is possible, and it is not as hard as it is cracked up to be.
If you could do anything different with your Genius Hour project what would you do differently and why? (No less than two full paragraphs.)
If I could do something different with my Genius Hour I would probably have someone do this journey with me. I would have a workout buddy, and that way we could track each others progress. I would journal, either video journal or writing journals of what I did each day and how I progressed. I would have taken before pictures and after pictures that way I could literally show the viewers mine and my partners progress.
I would do this because I am the type of person that needs reassurance constantly. If I do not see results right away, I tend to give up. I need someone to keep me accountable for my work outs and someone to push me to my limits. It helps me push myself when I can be there to motivate someone else as well. If I had a partner, we could keep each other accountable, and we could motivate each other when we are having a hard time. Also, it would have been nice to have someone help me with my eating habits. To have someone to tell me ‘no’ when I say I want Taco Bell or Wendy’s. Someone to remind me of what journey I am walking and why I am walking it. That is what I would do differently on my Genius Hour Project and why I would do this differently.
Reflect on what you did well during this Genius Hour process? Note your successes and accomplishments. (No less than two full paragraphs.)
What I did quite well during my Genius Hour project was that I kept my motivation up and my determination never faltered. I kept high standards for myself and I never let myself settle for less than my best. I performed at my highest and hardest 110% of the time and I am proud of myself for that. My eating habits were a little iffy because it is hard to eat healthy with school schedules, but I battled through it and I am proud of myself for that.
I might have struggled mid-way through it because I was in the phase of not yet seeing results, so I struggled with pushing myself, but then slowly but surely my pants began to get baggier and my shirts less tight. I began to feel better when I got up, and at night I wasn’t sitting contemplating whether I need to puke or not anymore. I had more energy in the morning when I woke up, and I found that after school and work I still had energy! I wasn’t feeling sick and tired and bloated, eating healthy and just a little bit of exercise each day gave me energy without having to add calories to my diet with monsters and energy drinks.
Include any videos, pictures, presentations, or artifacts that will document your journey.
